How I Healed My Gut and Burnout with Functional Medicine: A 360° Timeline View

In 2019, I was burned out, bloated, and barely functioning.
My gut was a mess. I had IBS symptoms, acne, allergies, brain fog — and no answers.

Doctors told me my labs were fine.
I was given antibiotics, creams, and vague lifestyle advice.
But nothing worked long-term.

It wasn’t until I discovered functional medicine — and created a full 360-degree timeline of my health — that things finally clicked.

Here’s how I used my story to uncover root causes and take back control of my health.

Step 1: I Mapped My Health Timeline (Screenshot Below)

Screenshot of a health timeline created using the GrowHealth app, detailing various health factors, diseases, medications, mediators, triggers, and personal notes.

In functional medicine, we use something called the Functional Medicine Timeline — a way to map your entire life from birth (and even before) to identify the root causes of chronic symptoms.

I started by asking questions like:

  • What was my mom’s health like during pregnancy?
  • Was I born vaginally or via C-section?
  • What infections or medications did I have in early childhood?
  • What changed in my teens and 20s?

When I zoomed out, I saw patterns I never noticed before:

  • Frequent antibiotics from early infections
  • Moving abroad as a kid (France & Malaysia) = major environmental stress
  • Acne medication like tetracycline and isotretinoin (Roaccutane)
  • Ultra-processed foods + partying in France = gut disaster
  • Post-vaccine IBS flare-ups and fatigue
  • Corporate burnout + stress + poor sleep = full system breakdown

This wasn’t random. It was accumulated imbalance.

Step 2: I Tracked My Symptoms, Balance & Lifestyle

Using the GrowHealth™ app, I tracked my symptoms, test results, and lifestyle changes over time.

In 2019, my health score was 59%.

Today, it’s 95%.

Sleep, energy, mood, digestion — everything has improved.

My Oura Ring confirms it. But more importantly, so does my life.

Step 3: I Focused on Lifestyle Shifts, Not Perfection

I didn’t become a monk.

But here are some of the things I changed:

✅ Sleep:

  • No food or screens before bed
  • Fixed bedtime/wake-up routines
  • Cooler, darker, quieter sleep environment
  • Supplements based on DNA + hair mineral testing

✅ Movement:

  • I stopped punishing workouts and shifted to consistent, joyful activity
  • No more “all in or nothing” — I moved daily, even if just a walk

✅ Nutrition:

  • I cut out inflammatory foods
  • I ate for gut health, brain function, and energy
  • I followed a flexible food framework built for my body

✅ Mindset & Reflection:

  • I started asking better questions:
    • Is this choice helping or hurting me long-term?
    • Am I living my vision, or my anti-vision?
  • I stopped doing what everyone else did and started listening to my body

The Real Breakthrough: Self-Reflection

If I had to pick one thing that changed everything, it wasn’t a supplement or protocol — it was learning to self-reflect.

Functional medicine helped me ask better questions and connect the dots.
And once I saw the full picture, I could finally do something about it.

Final Thoughts

My recovery wasn’t overnight — but it was real.

And the more I trusted myself, tracked what mattered, and applied functional medicine systems, the more things changed.

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to take the first step.
